Denis Hawes Designer Maker
Denis Hawes attended the FHC’s Introduction to
Wood course & was so enthused with working with
wood & fine furniture that he decided to postpone
retirement plans & join the Diploma Course. Although
he particularly likes making furniture using local
Western Australian timbers such as jarrah & she-oak,
he is also conscious of such timbers being available
in limited quantities. Denis therefore prefers to use
timber from sustainable plantation forests, & so his
pieces are often made using from exotic timbers.
His exhibition piece called 'Temptation' exhibits
the use of Oregon pine & American cherry, both of which
are sourced from sustainable plantations in North America.
Denis likes working with traditional hand-tools such as
chisels & planes,& he takes particular pleasure in keeping
them razor-sharp.
