Catriona Gregg, Head lecturer at the Australian Scool of Fine Wood

Catriona Gregg is the Australian School of Fine Wood’s Design      Studies Co-ordinator taking up the role in March 2007 having      been previously involved with the ASFW in the capacity of a      specialist lecturer.

Catriona graduated from W.A.I.T., Perth Western Australia in 1983 with a B.A.(Design) Her studies continued towards a career in furniture design and making at the renowned John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood, Parnham, Dorset, UK graduating in 1986.

The decision to apply to be considered for entry into the prestigious Makepeace course was inspired by prominent Australian sculptor/potter Joan Campbell who commended the pursuit of excellence inherent in the ethos of the School.
This principle is important to the work Catriona continues to undertake as a designer/maker and mentor at the Australian School of Fine Wood, Western Australia.

Following graduation from the Makepeace School in 1986, Catriona worked in London designing bespoke furniture, corporate and luxury yacht interiors. Whilst with the David Linley Furniture Company, London UK, her work included the 16.5m long English Oak board room table for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. USA and other significant projects for clients of fine handmade furniture.

Other work included the interior fitout design of luxury yachts being built in New Zealand, Turkey and the UK for Andrew Winch Designs and
Edward Dubois Naval Architects.

Since returning to Perth in 1990, Catriona’s work has continued to be diverse and challenging. Taking the perspective that design should be a seamless interaction of aesthetic and the pragmatic, projects have included furniture to commission, contemporary interiors, lecturing in design, hotels/restaurants and superyacht interiors.

The hotel projects include a senior design role in the team at Woodhead International responsible for the very successful CBD Restaurant and Rydges Hotel, Perth amongst others.

As Project Detail Designer (Interiors) for Greg Norman’s 69.5m superyacht “MY Aussie Rules”, (launched October 2002), Catriona was a senior member of the Oceanfast design tea charged with realising the client’s brief to the yacht designer and naval architect. This included the day to day supervision of the team of craftsmen and draughtsmen designing, making and fitting the walnut, leather and marble interior to the standard required by Lloyds of London.

In addition Catriona’s work is represented in furniture collections and exhibitions in Australia and the UK. The piece, ‘Chaise Longue’ 1992, was purchased by the Art Gallery of Western Australia for its permanent collection following ‘Design Visions, the Australian International Crafts Triennial’, 1992.
